GENERATING A PUBLIC CONVERSATION
There is perhaps nothing more controversial in the city of Philadelphia than street parking. With rigid parking requirements and a strict enforcement policy that includes towing first-time offenders, street parking in Philadelphia has even inspired its own realty show, Parking Wars. Most residents have felt the wrath of the city’s parking policies in some way. The project used a familiar artifact of Philadelphia's Live Stop Program – a tagged car windshield – to invite participants to share their own experiences with this controversial program. The installation was set up near City Hall with the goal of increasing awareness and sparking public debate. Passersby wrote stories of their interaction with the Live Stop Program on the windshield and read those shared by others, creating an opportunity for camaraderie, discussion, and shared meaning. This project was featured on Newsworks and WHYY.
